Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk

Beloved readers, this was another ingredient-led purchase. The ingredient quality is glorious! As I often note for products from this brand, it’s blissfully free of:

No Sulfates
No Parabens
No Phthalates
No Paraffin
No Gluten
No Propylene Glycol
No Mineral Oil
No Synthetic Fragrance
No PABA
No Synthetic Color
No DEA
No Animal Testing

Huzzahs all around!

Sadly, those are the only huzzahs I will call for.

My Experience

Disclaimer: Before I begin my tale of woe, I want to note that my hair has a love/hate relationship with shea butter.

Read my other experiences with this line for hair and body here. Curious about the coordinating shampoo? Click here.

T H E   G O O D

  • No build up
  • Rinsed cleanly (using the coordinating shampoo)
  • Smooths hair effectively
  • Moisturizes scalp
  • Strong coconut scent
  • A little goes a long way
  • Available at your local drugstore
  • $10

My hair was softer and slightly less frizz prone at first…but then as the day wore on became hard, frizzy, and very, very angry with me.

That is what it does when it does not like a certain formulation with shea butter in it. That says more about my hair’s preferences than this product, which I well realize! (Fans of this, you may now lower your weapons. Thank you in advance. #OneLove)

There are other products from this brand that do have shea butter in them–one I used for weeks every night without fail–that it loves, but sadly, this does not stand among them.

T H E   B A D

  • Will weigh down hair is overused (Greasy feel)
  • Slow to absorb (About 20 minutes)

Alas, my hair declared that it didn’t like it, and I was left to make puppy eyes at the bottle, knowing I wouldn’t finish it.

If your hair liked this, please share your experience. I want to live through you. (Don’t be shy!)

Please note: It occurs to me ladies with looser wavy/curly textures (and/or those with fine hair) may not be able to use this without loosing volume.

TL;DR

This product is fantastic for hair health–but it may not be your friend if your hair is picky about shea butter, which my mane is. #IWeep

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle

Beloved readers this product is one that I truly wanted my hair to love.

That did not happen for me. As a curly lady I’m always on the lookout for a good curly hair gel. (I weep.)

My Experience

I wish my hair did not have a love/hate relationship with shea butter, because of what this product does not have:

No Sulfates
No Parabens
No Phthalates
No Paraffin
No Gluten
No Propylene Glycol
No Mineral Oil
No Synthetic Fragrance
No PABA
No Synthetic Color
No DEA
No Animal Testing

And what it does have. (See ingredients.)

Texture-related observations:

I’ve noticed many that loved this had 4b-4z/4c hair types or tended to use it for twists, braids, and knot-outs.

I noticed that those within the 3b to 4a set generally had the best experience when pairing it with a creamy base, like the Curl Enhancing Smoothie (my review) from this line/brand. This proved true for me as well. However, currently, I prefer using one product to style my hair daily, so I did not repurchase it.

I’ve also noticed those 3a and looser textures reported greasy, heavy locks and were generally displeased with it.

Curious about my experiences with the other hair and body products from this line? Click here. (Enjoy!)

  • Rinsed away cleanly
  • No build up
  • Excellent styling aid
  • $10
  • Available at your local drugstore

This product was glorious for my scalp. This also boosted shine, softness, manageability, and helped with frizz a bit. This is not a “hard” curly hair gel. Don’t expect strong definition or hold from this.

For styles like buns, twist outs, braids, bantu-knot outs, smooth buns, and securing pin curls this is EXCELLENT. Softer, smoother hair awaits.

T H E   B A D

  • Extremely heavy/weighs down hair (if over applied)
  • Can leave hair without moisture after a few hours in drier climates (if applied too lightly)

Unfortunately my 3c/4a coils and curls were mussed by my application due to the weight of the product.

When I used as little as possible–which the Internets advise with this product–my hair was not the greasy, undefined mess it had been the first time I tried this, but ran out of moisture before the end of the day and become undefined, frizzy, and annoyed. (#DryAir)

Boff. Ah, well. The search for my Holy Grail curly hair gel continues, ladies.

TL;DR

Great for styling buns and twist/braid/knot outs, this product can leave your hair a greasy mess if over used.

shea-moisture-a-modern-lady-coconut-hibiscus-body-lotion-review

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Body Lotion

As you can see from the above photo, beloved readers, this lotion served me well. I’m not a huge fan of the scent of coconuts, but I loved what this lotion did for my skin.

My Experience

I like this brand, beloved readers, because their products don’t have:

Parabens
Phthalates
Paraffin
Gluten
Propylene Glycol
Mineral Oil
Synthetic Fragrance
PABA
Synthetic Color
DEA
Sulfates
Animal Testing

Zip. Zilch. Nada.

I became aware of it in 2011, when I went chemical-free in all my beauty regimens for a year. (I conducted a bit of an experiment.) I’m no longer 100% chemical-free in my beauty regimens, not by a long shot, but there are certain items of my beauty arsenal that must be predominantly natural in origin–mainly things that cover my entire body.

This is why I continue returning to this brand–that and the glorious quality of the products. This one is no exception, as you can see by its ingredients. (See below, they are lovely!)

T H E   G O O D

  • Absorbs quickly
  • Non-greasy
  • Lightly perfumes skin

It does offer light moisture, whisking away dryness and leaving behind a pleasant fruity scent. (I type that as one who does not care for fruity scents.)

T H E   B A D

  • Runny texture

This didn’t drench my skin in moisture, which is why I didn’t repurchase this. It’s not as thick as I prefer a lotion to be, unfortunately. I adore a thick, luxurious lotion. That is more a matter of my personal preference, than anything else.

If you enjoy other products from this line, enjoy natural lotions, or want to try something less synthetic this is a great option!

Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Deionized Water , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Stearyl Alcohol (Palm Kernel) , Vegetable Emulsifying Wax , Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter , Vegetable Glycerin , Olea Europaea Oil (Olive) , Essential Oil Blend , Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice , Tocopherol (Vitamin E) , Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract , Papain (Papaya Extract) , Allantoin (Comfrey Root Extract) , Lonicera Caprifolium Flower (Honeysuckle) , Lonicera Japonica Flower Extract (Japanese Honeysuckle) , Songyi Mushroom Extract , Cocos Nucifera Milk (Coconut)

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Body Butter

I bought this, beloved readers, because of it’s ingredient quality, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Better still, I had already enjoyed other products from this line, so I decided to try everything. (Flawless logic, I know.)

I also purchased it because of this:

  • Vitamin E to protect skin cells from free radical damage
  • No parabens, phthalates, paraffin, gluten, propylene glycol, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, PABA, synthetic color, DEA or sulfates
  • Cruelty free, no animal testing
  • Certified organic ingredients

My Experience

You may be curious about the firming and toning claims. I didn’t experience that benefit, but it deeply moisturized and calmed my skin as promised. I adore body butters, and this one absolutely deserves the label.

T H E   G O O D

  • Melts into skin
  • Softens

It has a light, pleasant scent which lingers for a few hours after application. There is a definite coconut note. I’m not a fan of creamy/fruity scents–but, I enjoyed this one.

Even better–it lasts quite a while! Using (ginormous) globs daily, I enjoyed about two months worth of uses out of this. It’s easy to burn through body butter, if you love it as much as I do, so this was a fantastic surprise.

T H E   B A D

  • Flip-top lids (Munches manis shamelessly)
  • Tube-packaging (The last 1/3 of product is difficult to access)

That’s it. (Shocking, I know.)

TL;DR

This body butter can nourish, heal, and smooth your roughest skin with ease. A standout product of this line.

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Bath, Body & Massage Oil

Beloved readers, I said this about the lavender-scented oil of this brand:

“If you have followed me long enough you know I have mixed my own perfumed oils for years, out of my preference for oil over lotion for keeping my skin soft and glowy.

This is for everyone out there that loves the sensuous feel of oil, lovely fragrance, and could not DIY something to save their life. (Or those that do not always feel like making everything from scratch.)”

That is true about this Shea Moisture body oil, too.

My Experience

It’s hard for me to contain the things I love about it to one post. As for the “firming and toning” bit? I didn’t experience either, but I did enjoy “plumping and glow-i-fying.”

(I am content.)

  • Hot Oil Treatment (for hair & Scalp)
  • Hair Perfume
  • Cuticle Oil
  • Shave Oil (So smooth!)
  • Massage Oil
  • Silky, rich texture
  • Melts into skin

This body oil left my skin plumped, soft, and glowing for hours with a subtle, lingering scent. This is a lovely addition to the hair and skin care Coconut & Hibiscus lines from Shea Moisture. It performed superbly with a lovely scent–if you care for fruity scents.

I admit that I don’t care for such scents, but I enjoyed this. It’s far lighter than the lavender-scented oil from this brand; yet, it gently lingers after application.

How is it able to do all of the above? Its lovely ingredients. (See below.)

Nothing.

TL;DR

This body oil has a variety of uses, making its quality and multi-tasking prowess for $10.00 a glorious drugstore find!

A Modern Lady shea-moisture-coconut-hibiscus-body-scrub Review

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Hand & Body Scrub

I enjoy the body scrubs from this line for two reasons: scent and performance.

This is significant, because I’m not really a body scrub person. Add to that, if I use scrubs I prefer salt scrubs. Also, I greatly dislike fruity/sweet scents.  For me to enjoy a sugar-based, fruit-scented body scrub it has to excellent–which this is. (Why did I try this, you ask? Brand quality and rampant curiosity, beloved readers.)

My Experience

  • Pleasant creamy/fruity scent
  • Packed with silky oils
  • Great post-shave treatment
  • Available at your local drugstore
  • Moisturizes, perfumes, and soothes skin
  • $10.00

The scent of this is more fruity/floral than coconut-y. I actually enjoyed it–a surprise indeed. There’s a hint of creaminess to it (the coconut?) and it lingers unobtrusively on skin for a couple of hours after use.

With every use silky oils drape your skin in moisture, as the sugar polishes your skin smooth, and the lovely scent melts away the stresses of the day. (So. Blasted. Awesome.)

Even better, it contains none of the following:

Sulfates
Parabens
Phthalates

Paraffin
Gluten
Propylene Glycol
Mineral Oil
Synthetic Fragrance
PABA
Synthetic Color
DEA
Animal Testing

T H E   B A D

  • Sugar-based scrub (Personal preference–I just prefer salt.)
  • Can dry out over time

TL;DR

This scrub is a lovely, daily luxury. The oil glides beautifully over skin moisturizing and perfuming it slightly while the sugar scrubs away excess dead skin.

Ingredients: Sugar, Safflower Oil (*Certified Oraganic Ingredient), Lavendar Buds, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) (*Certified Oraganic Ingredient), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter (*Certified Oraganic Ingredient), Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Jojoba Oil (*Certified Oraganic Ingredient), Vegetable Glycerin, Olea Europe (Olive) Oil (*Certified Oraganic Ingredient), Cymbidium Grandiflorum Flower Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower, Lonicera Japonica (HoneySuckle) Flower Extract, Essential Oil Blend, Calendula Extract, Lavender Oil, Rose Extract, Chamomile Extract, Valerian Root

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

Beloved readers, I purchased this shampoo on ingredient quality alone. I was not disappointed. I love finding a great shampoo for curly hair!

I also purchased it, because it’s free of these:

No Sulfates

No Parabens

No Phthalates
No Paraffin
No Gluten
No Propylene Glycol
No Mineral Oil
No Synthetic Fragrance
No PABA
No Synthetic Color
No DEA
No Animal Testing.

My Experience

Not only did this shampoo gently cleanse my hair without drying out my scalp–it multitasks. (You know I simply–adore–multitasking products.)

This is a fairly low-lathering shampoo, which could be a negative for some of you. Many of us know we do not actually needs “suds n’ bubbles” to have clean hair. That’s marketing at its finest; however, many of us (including myself from time to time) simply like them, so I thought I’d mention it.

(I understand the #BubbleLove, beloved readers. I don’t judge.)

It didn’t increase my curl definition or shine, but my hair was relatively healthy when I began using it, so there was little room for “improvement.”

T H E   G O O D

  • Gently cleanses
  • Does not strip hair nor scalp
  • Multitasks amazingly well
  • $10
  • High ingredient quality
  • Available at your local drugstore or Ulta
  • low lather (personal preference)
  • Light, fruity/creamy scent lingers in hair

This product can be a shampoo (of course!), body wash, bubble bath, hand soap, and shaving aid. I used it to wash my face as well without issue as well!

The scent of this is more fruity/floral the coconut-y. I’m not fond of fruity scents, but this wasn’t unpleasant. It lingers gently in the hair after rinsing, which will be a plus for those who like fruity-floral fragrances.

T H E   B A D

  • Did not remove hair styling products

This cleanses thoroughly, while doing so deceptively gently; but, it couldn’t remove my silicone-based styling serums or polyquat-loaded leave-ins entirely, so be aware that this works best with other “all natural” products or the rest of its own line best.

TL;DR

Ultimately, I was pleased with the performance of this. It left my hair and scalp clean, but not stripped, and my curls soft and fluffy. Another great shampoo for curly hair from Shea Moisture.

Ingredients: Deionized Water , Decyl Glucoside (Sugar Beets) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Aloe Vera Leaf Juice , Vitamin E , Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil (Neem) , Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (Coconut Oil) , Panthenol (Vitamin B-5) , Rosemary Extract , Silk Protein.

Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Body Butter

Beloved readers, the ingredients of this product are why it ended up in my basket, even though I’m #TeamBodyOil.

Thankfully: it seriously works.

My Experience

This wonderfully lavender body butter sinks into skin and truly nourishes it. Skin becomes plumped, a bit firmer, has more of a glow (if already prone to it), and become wonderfully soft. This nixed every dry spot–including feet, elbows, and knees– for me brilliantly. It healed my winter hands when I kept a tube in my hobo bag.

You can read my experience with the coordinating body oil and body scrub here.

T H E   G O O D

  • Lavender scent (personal preference)
  • Excellent performance

Add to its great performance: TRUE Lavender scent. None of that too-sweet-generic-Lavender foolishness–nope. This is spicy, heady, robust, elegant lavender in all its glory! (As of this post.)

T H E   B  A D

  • Tube packaging

(Yep. That’s it.)

I’m not a fan of tube packaging, and this is no exception–especially for such a wonderfully thick product. (Design team: STAHP with this!)

TL;DR

I’m forever a member of #TeamBodyOil, but I thoroughly enjoyed using this. I repurchased this three times before trying other Shea Moisture body butters (out of raging curiosity). Lavender body butter #forthewin.

Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Bath, Body & Massage Oil

Beloved readers, this multitasking lavender and wild orchid-laden body oil, is divine!

The ingredients caught my eye right away. I have not seen Rice Bran Oil in a beauty product for far too long. The “Rice Bran Beauty” in me rejoices! Better still, it’s followed by Shea Butter and Olive Oil. (Be still my heart!)

My Experience

The scent of this is actually mouth-watering, as are all the products of this line. This is spicy, vibrant, heady lavender! Inhale deeply and be prepared to be so calm you could have free haute couture gowns thrown at you and be unbothered to pick them up.

I adore a multitasking beauty product, and this performs several different tasks beautifully:

  • Spa bath (Follow directions of the bottle.)
  • Hot Oil Treatment (for hair & Scalp)
  • Hair Perfume

  • Shave Oil (So smooth!)

Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Body Scrub

Beloved readers, a quick glance at the ingredients of this product prompted me to put it into my basket while inwardly screaming: “MINE, MINE, MINE!! Mwahahaha!”

I’m harmless. Really.

That typed and read: I prefer salt scrubs and even they’re not a beloved part of my beauty regimen at the moment. (Rice Bran/Rice powder is my favorite physical exfoliant.)

My Experience

Why did I buy this lavender body scrub, let alone enjoy it when it doesn’t fit my preferences–ingredients aside?

Reason one: THE SCENT.

Reason two: IT WORKS.

T H E   G O O D

  • Glorious scent
  • A glorious blend of silky oils
  • Exfoliates effectively
  • Moisturizes
  • Softens
  • $10

The scent of this product is PARADISE IN A TUB! It. Is. Wondrous!

Just opening this tub of lavender body scrub goodness releases a tornado of fresh lavender flowers, fresh sugar, and heady orchid. It’s–literally–mouth-watering. (Literally.)

This blend of (yummy) oils glides over skin easily, while you gently message the sugar into your skin. You know you’re done when the sugar has melted away and moisturized skin remains.

Pro Tip: I really adore this for elbows and knees!

T H E   B A D

  • Strong fragrance (personal preference)
  • Can dry out

Few complaints–two, to be precise–but the fragrance is impossible to miss or “tolerate.” You’ll love it, or likely hate it.

TL;DR

A little bit will leave skin exfoliated, lightly perfumed, and moisturized in one step –lovely! This is a simple luxury not to be missed.
