Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

Beloved readers, I purchased this shampoo on ingredient quality alone. I was not disappointed. I love finding a great shampoo for curly hair!

I also purchased it, because it’s free of these:

No Sulfates

No Parabens

No Phthalates
No Paraffin
No Gluten
No Propylene Glycol
No Mineral Oil
No Synthetic Fragrance
No PABA
No Synthetic Color
No DEA
No Animal Testing.

My Experience

Not only did this shampoo gently cleanse my hair without drying out my scalp–it multitasks. (You know I simply–adore–multitasking products.)

This is a fairly low-lathering shampoo, which could be a negative for some of you. Many of us know we do not actually needs “suds n’ bubbles” to have clean hair. That’s marketing at its finest; however, many of us (including myself from time to time) simply like them, so I thought I’d mention it.

(I understand the #BubbleLove, beloved readers. I don’t judge.)

It didn’t increase my curl definition or shine, but my hair was relatively healthy when I began using it, so there was little room for “improvement.”

  • Gently cleanses
  • Does not strip hair nor scalp
  • Multitasks amazingly well
  • $10
  • High ingredient quality
  • Available at your local drugstore or Ulta
  • low lather (personal preference)
  • Light, fruity/creamy scent lingers in hair

This product can be a shampoo (of course!), body wash, bubble bath, hand soap, and shaving aid. I used it to wash my face as well without issue as well!

The scent of this is more fruity/floral the coconut-y. I’m not fond of fruity scents, but this wasn’t unpleasant. It lingers gently in the hair after rinsing, which will be a plus for those who like fruity-floral fragrances.

T H E   B A D

  • Did not remove hair styling products

This cleanses thoroughly, while doing so deceptively gently; but, it couldn’t remove my silicone-based styling serums or polyquat-loaded leave-ins entirely, so be aware that this works best with other “all natural” products or the rest of its own line best.

TL;DR

Ultimately, I was pleased with the performance of this. It left my hair and scalp clean, but not stripped, and my curls soft and fluffy. Another great shampoo for curly hair from Shea Moisture.

Ingredients: Deionized Water , Decyl Glucoside (Sugar Beets) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Aloe Vera Leaf Juice , Vitamin E , Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil (Neem) , Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (Coconut Oil) , Panthenol (Vitamin B-5) , Rosemary Extract , Silk Protein.

Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Body Butter

Beloved readers, the ingredients of this product are why it ended up in my basket, even though I’m #TeamBodyOil.

Thankfully: it seriously works.

My Experience

This wonderfully lavender body butter sinks into skin and truly nourishes it. Skin becomes plumped, a bit firmer, has more of a glow (if already prone to it), and become wonderfully soft. This nixed every dry spot–including feet, elbows, and knees– for me brilliantly. It healed my winter hands when I kept a tube in my hobo bag.

You can read my experience with the coordinating body oil and body scrub here.

  • Lavender scent (personal preference)
  • Excellent performance
  • $10
  • Wildly available
  • Thick, custard like texture

Add to its great performance: TRUE Lavender scent. None of that too-sweet-generic-Lavender foolishness–nope. This is spicy, heady, robust, elegant lavender in all its glory! (As of this post.)

  • Tube packaging

(Yep. That’s it.)

I’m not a fan of tube packaging, and this is no exception–especially for such a wonderfully thick product. (Design team: STAHP with this!)

TL;DR

I’m forever a member of #TeamBodyOil, but I thoroughly enjoyed using this. I repurchased this three times before trying other Shea Moisture body butters (out of raging curiosity). Lavender body butter #forthewin.

(Behold the beauty of its formula!)

Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Bath, Body & Massage Oil

Beloved readers, this multitasking lavender and wild orchid-laden body oil, is divine!

The ingredients caught my eye right away. I have not seen Rice Bran Oil in a beauty product for far too long. The “Rice Bran Beauty” in me rejoices! Better still, it’s followed by Shea Butter and Olive Oil. (Be still my heart!)

My Experience

In a word: Positive. Positive. Positive. Curious about my experiences with other products in this line? Click here.

  • Multitasks
  • Heady, rich fragrance
  • Silky, rich texture
  • $10
  • Available at your local drugstore and Ulta

The scent of this is actually mouth-watering, as are all the products of this line. This is spicy, vibrant, heady lavender! Inhale deeply and be prepared to be so calm you could have free haute couture gowns thrown at you and be unbothered to pick them up.

I adore a multitasking beauty product, and this performs several different tasks beautifully:

  • Spa bath (Follow directions of the bottle.)
  • Hot Oil Treatment (for hair & Scalp)
  • Hair Perfume
  • Cuticle Oil
  • Shave Oil (So smooth!)
  • Massage Oil

This body oil is a silky touch of everday luxury.

T H E   B A D

  • Strong fragrance (personal preference)

I’ve noticed the fragrance has been dialed back a bit, bottle to bottle; but, it’s still sweet (and strong) enough to be a concern, if you prefer light fragrances or dislike floral scents.

TL;DR

This lavish blend of oils and butters sinks into skin and leaves it plump, baby soft, glowy and perfectly perfumed for hours. (Enjoy.)

Shea Moisture Lavender & Wild Orchid Body Scrub

Beloved readers, a quick glance at the ingredients of this product prompted me to put it into my basket while inwardly screaming: “MINE, MINE, MINE!! Mwahahaha!”

I’m harmless. Really.

That typed and read: I prefer salt scrubs and even they’re not a beloved part of my beauty regimen at the moment. (Rice Bran/Rice powder is my favorite physical exfoliant.)

My Experience

Why did I buy this lavender body scrub, let alone enjoy it when it doesn’t fit my preferences–ingredients aside?

Reason one: THE SCENT.

Reason two: IT WORKS.

T H E   G O O D

  • Glorious scent
  • A glorious blend of silky oils
  • Exfoliates effectively
  • Moisturizes
  • Softens
  • $10
  • High-quality ingredients

The scent of this product is PARADISE IN A TUB! It. Is. Wondrous!

Just opening this tub of lavender body scrub goodness releases a tornado of fresh lavender flowers, fresh sugar, and heady orchid. It’s–literally–mouth-watering. (Literally.)

This blend of (yummy) oils glides over skin easily, while you gently message the sugar into your skin. You know you’re done when the sugar has melted away and moisturized skin remains.

Pro Tip: I really adore this for elbows and knees!

T H E   B A D

  • Strong fragrance (personal preference)
  • Can dry out

Few complaints–two, to be precise–but the fragrance is impossible to miss or “tolerate.” You’ll love it, or likely hate it.

TL;DR

A little bit will leave skin exfoliated, lightly perfumed, and moisturized in one step –lovely! This is a simple luxury not to be missed.

a-modern-lady-african-black-soap-purification-masque-review

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Masque

Beloved readers, this is a new Holy Grail deep conditioner for the times my scalp is enraged.

This is now a part of my Scalp First Aid Kit and it single-handedly propelled my scalp back into good health after two chemical disasters that left my scalp raw, weeping, dry, flakey, red, and generally furious with me. Keeping a healthy scalp is a priority for me–and this is one of my secret weapons.

This is battle-tested and AML approved!

My Experience

What did this glorious masque do for my tortured scalp, you ask?

Balanced my scalp

Soothed my scalp (Deeply, as in, my follicles rejoiced!)

Eliminated Flakes

(And I kid you not, my scalp healed twice as fast as it normally does, when my chemical whims overtake my common sense. Healthy scalp for the win, beloved readers!)

  • Fresh, soft, slightly-sweet scent that lingers unobtrusively
  • Melts into hair
  • Does not weight hair down
  • Spreads easily
  • No build up
  • Rinses cleanly

As mentioned above, this made a massive difference in the health of my scalp.

I noticed this one help my scalp return to a state of balance–no irritation, (the usual) level of oil production, and a supple, smooth texture.

T H E   B A D

  • Package design
  • Low slip

This is so thin it could be in a container with a pump, which I’d prefer as I don’t care for tubs. (Hint, hint design team!)

You can detangle with this, but if you have highly textured hair, don’t rely on this just for dealing with tangles (with the intention of a bit of scalp therapy in the process). Consider alternating with a “slippy” conditioner for major detangling sessions.

A-Modern-Lady-shea-moisture-african-black-soap-balancing-conditioner-Review This is a Holy Grail conditioner for scalp issues

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Balancing Conditioner

Beloved readers, this conditioner came in wonderfully handy for helping me heal my scalp after stepping away from chemical hair straighteners. (Grrr, Brazilian Keratin treatments!)

My Experience

Much like its accompanying shampoo and masque, this soothed my scalp and left my hair supple.

I have also used this after my scalp was irritated by hair dye and enjoyed a quicker route to recovery. Whatever your scalp issues are, chronic or otherwise, this is a great product option.

Curious about my other experiences with this line (and brand)? Read them here. (Enjoy!)

  • No build up
  • Rinses cleanly
  • Does not weight down hair
  • Nixes flakes
  • Spreads easily

It also has an additional beauty hack: Less inflammation when used for shaving! Huzzah!

This conditioner will allow highly-textured beloved readers to detangle, but it does not have enough slip for a major detangling sessions. If you have coily, tightly curled, or kinky tresses, have your preferred detangling conditioner handy to alternate with this one.

T H E   B A D

  • Low-to-medium slip

I overused this on occasion, to make up for its lack of slip. This did not stop me from repurchasing it several times, but it’s worth nothing if you have highly, textured, dense/thick hair as I do. Looser wavy/straight hair textures with significant length may also want to be aware of this as well.

TL;DR

Whether you actually have chronic scalp issues or not, this is fantastic for those times when your scalp is thrown off balance and needs extra TLC. This’ll always be one of my go-tos for future scalp woes. Her’s to healthy scalps and healthy hair.

a-modern-lady-shea-moisture-african-black-soap-deep-cleansing-shampoo-review THis is the best shampoo for scalp problems beloved reader

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo

Beloved readers, this is the shampoo for scalp problems. I purchased this to aid me in healing my scalp after permanently stepping away from chemical straighteners.

My scalp had reacted quite violently to my last round of chemical straightening which threw off my scalp’s entire chemistry and left it scaly, red, raw, burned wreck.

I knew I had to heal my scalp if I wanted to return to better hair days, so I decided to make this part of my recovery plan.

My Experience

This delivered MIGHTILY.

Not only did it deeply cleanse and exfoliate my scalp–it soothed it!

T H E   G O O D

  • Light, soft fragrance (lingers in hair slightly)
  • Cleanses deeply, without stripping
  • Soothes and calms scalp

This has a lightly sweet scent, with a hint of banana peel (the plaintain enzyme is behind this, I believe). It’s rather pleasant.

The color is absolutely beguiling. I was going to try this in all honesty, just for the color–a gorgeous onxy shade–but, please note: that it does not stain any thing nor will it darken your hair.

It leaves behind a cool, refreshed scalp that is ready to receive a nourishing deep conditioning treatment or the accompanying conditioner, both of which I also used. You can read my experiences with the rest of the line here.

This is excellent for clarifying for those on all-natural-product regimens, for true dandruff sufferers that find exfoliating keeps flakes at bay, and for those going through a temporary spat with their scalp.

T H E   B A D

  • Can dry hair if over used

While this shampoo is surprisingly gentle, considering how effective it is, as it says on the bottle it’s a deep cleansing shampoo. I suggest alternating it with a moisturizing shampoo. You can read my experience with other shampoos from this brand here.

TL;DR

This creates a gentle, milky lather that soothes irritation as it removes excess oil, dirt, flakes, and #sadfeels. It is the shampoo for scalp problems.

Shea Moisture Olive & Green Tea Bubble Bath & Body Wash

Looking for a natural body wash? Look no further. This will set the standard for bubble baths, relationships, and daily body cleansers in your life.

This is just that good, hence the battered bottle in the picture above. This clearly got a great deal of use in my beauty arsenal. Why?

I LOVE IT THAT MUCH!

It should look like this, by the way, when not mangled by heavy usage:

a-modern-lady-shea-moisture-olive-and-green-tea-bubble-bath-and-body-wash-best-natural-body-wash-ever-review-2

I’ve repurchased this product over nine times. And gifted it to family and friends.

(Suffice to say: I really like it.)

My Experience

Why does my bottle look so ravaged? Because it multitasks so gloriously:

  • Bubble bath
  • Body wash
  • Shampoo
  • Facial wash
  • Hand soap
  • Shaving aid

It does it all well.

T H E   G O O D

  • Excellent fragrance
  • Fantastic bubble production (Level: Disney Princess Spa Day)
  • Multitasks
  • $10
  • Widely available at your local drugstore

It explodes into a glorious BLANKET of fluffy, soft, silky, bright, white bubbles with a decadent, Honeysuckle-sweet scent with a clean hint of green tea.

Bathing PARADISE, beloved readers, is what this is! I was looking for a natural body wash while attempting to remove all non-natural-in-origin products from my beauty regimens.

My routine? I fill my bath tub with warm water, add a healthy glob of this, and amass a four-inch-thick layer of bubbles, and slip into them with utter relish.

This is definitely in the Top 3 best (multi-tasking!) body washes I’ve ever used. (And I’ve used dozens!) All of the day’s sweat, grime, and bad feelings melt away with ease. Even better still–this leaves you squeaky clean and pleasantly scented.

This helped me calm down enough to sleep after a full day of #adulting.

T H E   B A D

  • Very powerful cleanser
  • Texture (personal preference)

This will leave you squeaky clean–great after a workout, but use a moisturizing lotion afterwards.

The texture of this caught me off guard. It’s syrupy and a bit sticky, which I did not expect in the slightest. When massaged in your hand it turns into bright white, milky kind of “soap lotion.” This isn’t a “bad” thing per se, but it’s worth nothing.

TL;DR

THIS IS GLORIOUS! (Seriously.) I have repurchased this multiple times and I must say it is currently my favorite bubble bath!

a-modern-lady-review-living-proof-restore-conditioner

Living Proof Restore Conditioner

I used this on my virgin hair and chemically-battered hair to magnificent result.

My Experience

This restored my hair–literally–restored it. After three or four uses my hair was softer, less frizzy, and breakage was noticeably curbed. Consider that the first time I used this, I had chemically-straightened, dyed hair that I heat styled frequently–yes, this stuff is amazing. Out of curiosity I used it again on virgin hair and it perfected my God-given curly texture. I was shocked.

This left my hair soft and silky without added weight and a fresh, clean scent.

  • Price

This may be(come) pricey depending on your hair’s thickness and length. I found it utterly worth it’s price while my hair was at a shorter length.

I must be honest: you can enjoy similar results with other products–other products under the $28.00 price point of this product.

a-modern-lady-clean-mindful-eating

My (Slow Down) Soup and Salad Challenge

Beloved readers, the “Slowdown Soup & Salad Challenge” is a culmination of a glorious experiment that I blundered into with the grace of a water-logged koala last Fall.

I cook 99% of what I consume, from scratch, with whole, mostly organic ingredients.

Having a love of aesthetics, last year I began serving ALL of my meals, on a bed of lettuce and required myself to eat it!. I also like to sip broth while cooking to not wholly ruin my appetite. I enjoy a light broth-based soup as an appetizer, to prevent my speed-eating habit from rearing its ugly head. I blame aggressive years of work and school. (I had to inhale calories whenever I had the chance.)

This allowed me to add more fresh greens into my diet without experiencing green-smoothie burnout. (It happens to the best of us. #TeamKale) I plate lovelier dishes, and I effortlessly reduced my portion sizes of carbs and animal proteins thanks to the filling fiber in the rich, dark greens.

This is significant for me as portion sizes in my childhood home were enormous. I learned to “eat with my eyes,” rather than listen to my body.  This is something I’ve had to be vigilant about correcting.

Better still, I was increasing my non-caffeinated fluid intake.

Furthermore it forced me to take the time to truly revel in and enjoy food preparation. I admit, at first I found myself having to literally schedule in this time.

And now?

Yeah, I still have to actually schedule this, or I’ll find reasons to not take the time to enjoy this necessary, but pleasant moment in every day life.

I soon realized…

How meditative and relaxing it was to enjoy the process of preparing nourishing food, even if only for myself.

How calming, meditative, and energizing it was to get up early to prepare a meal and allow my mind to slowly wake up.

How glorious it was to hear nothing but the sound of sizzling ingredients, the rumbling steam produced by my kettle, and the pleasant “Chup, chup, chup!” of my handsome knife sliding through that day’s robust ingredients. Bonus points: Early morning birdsong!

(It’s worth getting up before the sun to enjoy!)

Trust me, it makes facing your daily commute so much easier!

Suffice to say: I discovered a entirely new realm of simple luxuries!

(Huzzah!)

So I’m challenging myself to keep this up.

How?

  1. Serve at least 90% of my meals on a bed of lettuce.
  2. Have a small salad and serving of broth-based soup with my entree.
  3. Sit down to eat (At a proper place setting) of some kind)

This’ll require variety in the broths, soups, and salads I consume as well as the type of greens I serve my meals upon. It’ll also require my buying those ingredients regularly and making them a regular part of my weekly menus.
