Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle

Beloved readers this product is one that I truly wanted my hair to love.

That did not happen for me. As a curly lady I’m always on the lookout for a good curly hair gel. (I weep.)

My Experience

I wish my hair did not have a love/hate relationship with shea butter, because of what this product does not have:

No Sulfates
No Parabens
No Phthalates
No Paraffin
No Gluten
No Propylene Glycol
No Mineral Oil
No Synthetic Fragrance
No PABA
No Synthetic Color
No DEA
No Animal Testing

And what it does have. (See ingredients.)

Texture-related observations:

I’ve noticed many that loved this had 4b-4z/4c hair types or tended to use it for twists, braids, and knot-outs.

I noticed that those within the 3b to 4a set generally had the best experience when pairing it with a creamy base, like the Curl Enhancing Smoothie (my review) from this line/brand. This proved true for me as well. However, currently, I prefer using one product to style my hair daily, so I did not repurchase it.

I’ve also noticed those 3a and looser textures reported greasy, heavy locks and were generally displeased with it.

  • Rinsed away cleanly
  • No build up
  • Excellent styling aid
  • $10
  • Available at your local drugstore

This product was glorious for my scalp. This also boosted shine, softness, manageability, and helped with frizz a bit. This is not a “hard” curly hair gel. Don’t expect strong definition or hold from this.

For styles like buns, twist outs, braids, bantu-knot outs, smooth buns, and securing pin curls this is EXCELLENT. Softer, smoother hair awaits.

  • Extremely heavy/weighs down hair (if over applied)
  • Can leave hair without moisture after a few hours in drier climates (if applied too lightly)

Unfortunately my 3c/4a coils and curls were mussed by my application due to the weight of the product.

When I used as little as possible–which the Internets advise with this product–my hair was not the greasy, undefined mess it had been the first time I tried this, but ran out of moisture before the end of the day and become undefined, frizzy, and annoyed. (#DryAir)

Boff. Ah, well. The search for my Holy Grail curly hair gel continues, ladies.

TL;DR

Great for styling buns and twist/braid/knot outs, this product can leave your hair a greasy mess if over used.
